Even though we are well and truly in the throes of Winter here on the GC, judging what to wear from one day to the next can be a little bit tricky. Especially when the temperature dips and rises so much in one day, leaving us shivering one minute and sweating the next.
That’s why it’s time to embrace the art of layering. We’re here to give you a few tips and tricks that will have you layering like a pro in no time.
Go light and work your way up. Start with a light layer say a t-shirt or a button up. Remember if the mercury rises and you have to strip down to this layer, make sure it looks good! None of this “I’ll just throw on this old thing as no-one will ever see it”! (Famous last words).
You don’t have to look like a sumo wrestler to keep warm. Knits come in all shapes and sizes and don’t need to be bulky. A long sleeve tshirt worn under a fine wool/cotton blend jumper will keep you just as warm as a big bulky knit. Find pieces that keep you warm without adding unflattering bulk to your frame.
Mix the seasons. One of the best things about layering is you can utilize your favourite pieces all-year-round. A pretty floral shift dressed reserved for the summer months, can look effortlessly chic just by adding a long-line cardigan and long boots. As can a silk cami worn underneath a fluffy knit and paired with jeans and boots.
Keep it simple. Try to keep all the lines in your outfit laying flat. If you are wearing a collared shirt for example, make sure there are no other collars. No collars on collars, no pockets on pockets, no pleats on pleats. Again this will streamline your look and not add extra lumps and bumps.
Save the biggest layer until last. In the name of balance, your outer layer should always be the largest and bulkiest. Your quilted jacket or blanket coat is the last thing you put on and the first you take off.
Stick to a complimentary colour pallet. Now is not the time to experiment with clashing prints and crazy colour combinations. Pair subtle like-minded colours together. Only have one hero piece in your ensemble, for example an emerald green body bag adds a pop of colour to your grey jumper and black jeans or a vibrant statement tshirt looks super cool and casual under your denim shirt and navy blazer.
Don’t forget to zhuzh! That’s fashion speak for take a few minutes to style up your finished outfit. Pull out the shirt cuffs from underneath the jumper and jacket and show them. Front tuck your tshirt into your waistband slightly to reveal a waistline. Pull out your shirt tails from underneath your jumper. Roll up the cuffs of your jeans ever so slightly to reveal some ankle. Little things but they go a long way to making you look “done”.
